HA10 Task 1 - Glossary

Media Text - Any media product that can be examined, like books, posters, songs, video games, movies or TV programs.

Semiotics - Semiotics is the study of interpreting signs and symbols as a way of communicating. Many types of media use signs and symbols that are left to be interpreted by the audience, especially in fictional media.

Genre - A genre is a category in any type of entertainment. Video games are split up into genres such as Horror, Action, Adventure, etc. They are split up like this because it is much easier for people to search for the types of games that they like, and avoid any that they dislike. A game genre is defined by how the game is played, instead of its story or how the game looks. If a game involves a lot of exploration of a wide variety of locations, it would be placed in the Adventure genre.

Selection of content - The selection of content involves looking at the target audience's interests, and finding information that can be used for your product to appeal to those interests. Colours, symbols, shapes, etc. would be looked at when selecting content.

Construction of content - The construction of content is also known as the way it is structured and created, including things such as interaction with the player.

Codes and conventions - Codes are a system of signs, which are used to create meaning. Conventions are the generally accepted ways in which things are done. Each genre of video game has different codes and conventions.

Modes of address - The mode of address is the way that a piece of media is written, so that it becomes more appealing to certain audiences. A dark, gritty and complicated video game would appeal more to adults than a bright and simple game.
